Dessie Smith Prescott's house on Lake Rousseau in Citrus County is called Wahoo Ranch. She was born in  Florida, August 4th. 1906, and died in April 19th., 2002. Dessie left her Ranch located in the City of Crystal River to her Caregiver for 18 years Candace Boothe who is now promoting Dessie’s property as a Historical property in honor to one of the great pioneers of the twentieth century in Florida.
Dessie was orphaned at age 12, Prescott not only survived, she flourished. Prescott's love of the outdoors is legendary. At age 19, Prescott built her own log cabin. She built a hunting & fishing lodge on the Withlacoochee River located in the City of Inglis, Florida; and she operated it for 10 years.
Prescott was the first licensed female pilot and the first female hunting and fishing guide in Florida. She served in the military as first Lieutenant during World War II, with the United States Army.
Prescott's independency and outdoor skills provided inspiration for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' novels The Yearling, South Moon Under, and Cross Creek. She was the hunting & fishing trainer for Marjorie. Prescott's boat trip on the St. Johns River with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was chronicled in the 'Hyacinth Drift' chapter of Rawlings' Cross Creek.
Dessie Smith Prescott was inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame in 1999. On April 19, 2002 Dessie took her final trip. Our mission is to make this Ranch a Historical Property.

“This is a woman who has gone places in a time and an era where other women didn’t dare go. It was out of survival and by following her instincts that were telling her she could do those things. She made women realize, ‘Hey, this woman did things like this when they weren’t acceptable. We need to learn from her. If you stop learning from somebody who’s been around as long as Dessie has, then you’re just close-minded “(Florida State Representative, Nancy Argenziano, 2001).
